Color profiles, Mac and monitors: me rend fou!

I am probably more confused now.

What Pascal says makes sense to me, although I am not a specialist in the technical field, as obvious.
I will try to stick to RGB as "display profile".
By the way, "system" and "sRGB" seem identical to me.
While under RGB gives me colours less saturated and a bit less vibrant, especially on reds.

And why when exporting with a sRGB space for web I keep seeing the same Colors as within dt with the display RGB profile?

And again, if the only output of dt would be sRGB than how could I see a difference between sRGB and RGB, despite the monitor?
I guess I will never be 100% sure; what is correct is that it would be a real pity not to take advantage of the full gamut of the monitor, as said.

I don't think we are talking about the same thing. The Eizo is hardware profiled and the color space for this Eizo is AdobeRGB. So obviously that is the color space you need to use for the display profile. It will restrict the gammut to AdobeRGB, send the data to the monitor which *is* profiled and can render 99% of AdobeRGB color space.

This is not how it works, the gamut of the screen is not characterizedby the Adobe RGB but by its own profile which if I believe the discussion of pixelus, exceeds the A98 on the three primaries. The representation given is in 2D, but one must take into account the volume and there, even my screens which are not of the quality of the Eizo exceed the A98 in volume of approximately 15%.
Constraining the gamut is practiced for input profiles, but not for output profiles.
In the hardware calibration process, ColorNavigator sends a linear "curve" into the graphic card and curves calculated in the internal screen Lut. Thus, what is recorded at the OS level must remain transparent.
Only Matteo will be able to test himself and tell us what he sees.

Pour pallier au fait que mon anglais est loin d'être parfait et pour Matteo qui nous indique que l'on peut lui répondre en français :
Ce n'est pas comme ça que ça fonctionne, le gamut de l'écran n'est pas caractérisé par l'Adobe RGB mais par son profil propre qui si j'en crois la discussion de pixelus, dépasse l'A98 sur les trois primaires. Dans le processus de calibrage hardware, ColorNavigator envoie une "courbe" linéaire dans la carte graphique et les courbes calculées dans la Lut interne de l'écran. Ainsi, ce qui est enregistré au niveau de l'OS doit rester transparent.
Seul Matteo pourra faire ses essais et nous dire ce qu'il voit.

Depends on the picture. If all you colors in the picture are inside the sRGB color space, it won't make a difference indeed.

@pascalG: pour moi ça ne marche pas. J'ai un écran externe AdobeRGB et calibré hardware. Si j'utilise "system" comme profile pour mon écran externe j'ai des couleurs qui ne correspondent pas du tout à la même image jpeg affichée sur mon écran de portable. Si j'utilise le profile AdobeRGB alors les deux images ont la même colorimétrie (depuis dt sur mon écran externe profile AdobeRGB et affiché en jpeg sur mon écran de portable calibré soft). Donc l'expérience que j'ai ne correspond pas à ce que tu dis. Pour info je suis sous Linux et je n'ai pas activé de profile écran dans GNOME/colord puisque mon écran est calibré hardware. Peut-être que sur MacOS ça na marche pas pareil? Je serais étonné cependant...

In fact they should, almost, as seen, coincide. Yet, they do not.

For instance, the red of the umbrella on the image I am attaching is driving me crazy, it changes from "RGB" to "my own .icc" significantly. Let alone to sRGB, obviously.

Because you said that your screen is hardware calibrated so it is already integrated (sent by the dedicated software) inside your screen. You don't want to apply it again here.

Je n'avais pas vu ce post en anglais !

Voici ma réponse en français (copie de celle que j'ai placée dans le post existant, par ailleurs, en français.

J'ai sensiblement la même configuration que toi, un mac Mini, un Ecran Eizo CS240 et une sonde I1Pro.
Mon écran est calibré avec le profil 'photography' proposé, par défaut, par le logiciel de ma sonde, colornavigator 6 qui englobe l'espace adobeRGB à 99% et bien évidemment l'espace sRGB.

Je développe donc mes photos dans cet espace.
Pour l'export je peux ensuite choisir, sans problème, d'exporter ma photo en AdobeRGB ou en sRGB.

Si besoin je vérifie les écarts de rendu avec la fonction 'epreuvage' de dt.
Pour tester tout cela je me suis fait un fichier image qui permet de visualiser la différence entre les deux espaces AdobeRGB et sRGB. 
Normalement si ton écran est bien dans le profil 'photography'' ou 'AdobeRGB' tu devrais voir ci-dessous un carré rouge avec un visage.



Si tu ne vois qu'un simple carré rouge, c'est que tu es en sRGB.
J'espère que cela marche car je n'ai fait ce test que sur mon écran !

Maintenant si tu charges ce fichier sur dt et que celui-ci est bien dans l'espace 'photography' ou 'AdobeRGB' tu devrais voir le visage. Mais ce visage doit disparaître si tu fais le test d'épreuvage en sRGB.

Autre essai possible : exporter cette image à partir de dt en choisissant dans le module export soit le profil AdobeRGB soit le profil sRGB. Tu devrais alors constater la disparition du visage dans la version sRGB.

Donc pour conclure, moi j'ai choisi de faire le développement dans l'espace 'photography' et de ne choisir AdobeRGB ou sRGB qu'au moment de l'export.
Remarque : avec le profil 'photography' tu peux choisir la luminosité de ton écran et pas avec le profil AdobeRGB car ce paramètre semble être fixé par la norme.

Je suppose que tu parles de la sélection sur l'écran lui même? Nous parlions de la sélection dans darktable. Qu'utilises tu?

@pascal, sous Mac OS, Colorsync indique automatiquement le profil déterminé par ColorNavigator (l'info m'a été donnée par un possesseur de mac et d'eizo CG). C'est étonnant mais ça semble informatif puisque seul le profil intégré dans l'écran doit être utilisé. Dans ces conditions et dans le cas de Matteo, je mettrais plutôt le profil écran que l'A98 car il n'y a mécaniquement aucune différence à indiquer l'un ou l'autre.
Je suis également surpris que dans le cas de Linux, le logiciel d'étalonnage ne renseigne pas automatiquement le profil écran ! Est-ce le cas aussi avec un étalonnage software ?

I do not understand this sentence well. You say that you indicate Adobe RGB in dt and that the colors become desaturated?
There are only 2 reasons why an image appears too much or not enough saturated:
- too saturated: the image is displayed in a space larger than the one in which it is defined (eg image defined in sRGB and view in Adobe RGB),
- not saturated enough: the image is visualized in a space smaller than the one in which it is defined (eg image defined in Adobe RGB and view in sRGB).

This would seem to be the second case for you. Hope this hlep you to understand what you see.

The answer is depending on the good setting of the computer...

Non en cas d'étalonnage software j'ai bien le profil indiqué dans le gestion de profile de GNOME/colord. Et c'est bien colord qui gère cela. Mais dans le cas hardware c'est l'écran et je n'ai aucune indication dans GNOME/colord du profil. Je désactive donc la gestion couleur pour mon écran avec calibration hardware.
